FTR Player: Fixing the MediaLooks License Expired Error

Posted in FTR, FTR Problem Resolution by admin on September 29, 2011 No Comments yet

Recently I had an Attorney who uses the FTR Player to listen to his clients court appearences call me because they had recently downloaded and installed the latest FTR Player software but when they attempting to play back the recording with TheRecord Player, an error message indicates that the MediaLooks license has expired.

After doing some trouble shooting and running a reinstall of TheRecord Player software was able to find the issue. As it turns out that the TheRecord Player 5.3 or above, must be installed when logged on as a member of the local administrators group or on a non networked machine must use an administrator account with full permissions, Otherwise the following error message will be  displayed. “An error occurred while attempting to start playback. Reload content and try again (0×800004040).”

After doing some digging on the FTR Community http://www.community.fortherecord.com/index.php?/index I found the following solution to this issue. I hope this helps anyone out there that is having the same problem.

How to save FTR Audio in Legacy FTR Format

Posted in FTR, FTR Problem Resolution by admin on November 19, 2010 No Comments yet

So here is the problem when attempting to save FTR content recorded in FTR Gold version 2.x (WAV) in Player 5.4.2 the only save options are Separate Channels and Windows Media. The ability to save as FTR Legacy content needs to be enabled with modifications to the registry.

Warning: Registry Modifications should only be attempted by suitably experienced users. The following solution may require you be to be logged on as a local administrator.

Solution : -
Add the following registry setting to enable/disable the Save to Legacy option.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/FTR/Player/AllowSaveAsGoldWAV

This setting is a DWORD and should be set to:
1 (to enable FTR Legacy saving)
0 (to disable FTR Legacy saving)

If you are unfamiliar with the registry the attached application EnableSaveToLegacy.zip will make the required changes.
To run the application, unzip the files to your computer and then double click EnableSaveToLegacy.exe
If the option is currently disabled then click Enable to enable the Save to Legacy option.

If it is option is currently enabled then click Disable to disable the Save to Legacy option.

If this message is displayed, click Quit, right-click EnableSaveToLegacy.exe and select Run as Administrator.

Assisted Listening For ADA Compliance.

Posted in ADA Compliance, Assisted Listening by admin on November 5, 2010 No Comments yet

Over the last couple of decades ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) compliance has become more and more important for businesses and government agencies. Everyone from your local neighborhood churches to court rooms and council chambers are moving towards ADA compliance with the addition of Assisted Listening Devices.

There are different types of assisted listening systems that can be considered depending on your organizations specific needs the two main choices that people will come across are FM band or Infrared. Both of these types work well, however there are some things to consider when choosing a assisted listening system.

For example lets take a look at the differences be the FM Band and the Infrared. While both will work, there are considerations such as the environment in which it will be used. The FM band will be able to be picked up by anyone with a receiver that is tuned to the specific frequency of the transmitter from a distance of up to 300 feet. Which can be a potential liability in situations where privacy is of the utmost importance. The FM band is however very reliable as proven with the NADY ALD800 which is a sturdy, cost effective system that comes with the transmitter and 4 receivers. The NADY ALD800 also has a proven track record of reliability in courts and other settings. Another popular option for the FM band is the Listen Technologies which is one of the most well known makers of ADA compliant listening devices, the Listen LS-02 basic listening system. This system is a little pricier but is wonderfully reliable and has gotten some good reviews.

Then we have the infrared systems. These tend to be on the pricier side of the spectrum but if security is a major concern they are the most secure as nobody outside the room will be able to hearwhat is going on no matter what. The reason for this is the the IR systems are absolutely line of sight. which means if the person wearing the receiver does not have a clear line of sight the system will not work. In fact I have heard of cases where someone walks between the person listening and what is called the radiator and the system cut out for a second. However, I have not heard that this is much of a problem and the IR systems are tops for security needs. One such system is the Listen LS-80.

The last application I would like to discuss is language interpretation. In our ever growing multi-cultural society where more and more people speak different languages courts and other civic bodies are now being required to provide interpreters for those people and would like to be able to have a more discrete way of meeting the needs of this growing section of our population. A perfect way to meet these needs is the Listen LT-700 portable FM transmitter and receiver. What makes this unit so nice is that it is small, about the size of a walkie talkie, clips to the belt allowing for freedom of movement and allows the interpreter to do their job by listening to the proceedings from the back of the room and interpreting to whoever needs it. you can also use this in a setting with another listening system because you can program the necessary channel to prevent interference.

We hope this helps in your decision as to which system is right for your needs.

Speech Recognition Is It Right For You.

Posted in speech recognition by admin on September 24, 2010 No Comments yet

Today I would like to talk about speech recognition compared to digital dictation. With a lot of medical offices moving to EHR (Electronic Health Records) and Law Firms moving away from hand held dictation It may be easy to jump onto the Speech recognition band wagon. But is it right for you.

Two major considerations that need to be taken into account when it comes to deciding to move into the speech recognition market are. First, location. Location is a major part of making speech recognition work for you rather than against you. If you do most of your dictating in a noisy atmosphere with a lot of people you will have difficulty with the system being able to pick up what you are saying. In these type of areas probably the most important thing to consider for getting the best results is equipment. You would do best with a microphone of headset with professional level noise cancellation. Remember not all noise cancellation is the same when it comes to this you really do get what you pay for. The twenty dollar noise cancellation will assuredly not work as well as the two hundred dollar noise cancellation.

Another option to overcome the noisy area problem is to dictate into a digital handheld and upload the audio into the speech recognition engine. All lines of Nuance Dragon Naturally Speaking except the standard edition have the capability to ingest the audio from digital handheld and then type out the dictation from the file.

The second thing to consider is the situation in which you plan on using your speech recognition. I have been asked by a few different councils and boards if speech recognition would be good when recording their meetings. The answer to that is no. As it is today speech recognition is designed and works well for individuals not groups. The reason is the speech recognition engines that are on the market require you to train it to your voice. If you tried to use speech recognition in a multi-person setting it would not work at all.

I hope this answered at least a couple of questions to help you decide if speech recognition is right for you.

FTR Player 5.4 - Non Responsive Interface

Posted in FTR, FTR Problem Resolution by admin on August 17, 2010 No Comments yet

Recently I have had a string of customers who have said that the FTR Player 5.4.x Interface freezes after you load the audio. here is one such person with this issue.

“The FTR Player 5.4.1 appears to install properly, audio loads and will begin play, but then player controls do not respond.
The volume sliders don’t move, time/seconds do not advance, track lights don’t work, and can’t move cursors or use arrows to adjust times.
(not a switching to compact mode issue.)

FTR PlayerPlus2.2 was running stable on this machine (and Log Notes 2.2) playing same FTR Gold recorded audio. 5.4.1 was uninstalled, and re-installed a couple times – complete with registry edits to remove FTR.
File has been re-downloaded in case first was corrupt, re-installed, same problem.Checked log for app errors…none.”

Here are a couple of potential solutions to this problem. Note: each of these solutions has worked for some and have not worked with others this is meant for possible solutions.

Solution 1.

Uninstall the FTR Player, clean the registry and re-install the software using the following steps. WARNING: editing the registry can have very dire consequences be sure you creat a registry backup before continuing.

1. Go into Add/Remove Programs and remove all FTR Programs.
2. Next go into the Registry and remove HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\FTR and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\FTR
3. Go to your C:\ Drive and remove C:\FTR Settings and go into the Program Files and remove C:\Program Files\FTR
4. Delete anything in C:\WINDOWS\assembly with FTR at the front
5. Reboot the PC
6. Redownload the 5.4.1 player and reinstall

To remove from the Registry:

Click on START
Click on RUN
Type
REGEDIT
Click on the plus sign next to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Click on the plus sign next to
SOFTWARE Folder
RIGHT click on the FTR Folder and choose Delete and yes.
Click on the plus sign next to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Click on the plus sign next to
SOFTWARE Folder
RIGHT click on the FTR Folder and choose Delete and yes.
Close the Registry Editor

Solution 2.

Disable Video Acceleration. To do this…

Right click on your desktop and click ‘Properties’
Click on the ‘Settings’ tab
Click the ‘Advanced’ button
Click the ‘Troubleshoot’ tab
Set Video Acceleration to None

Solution 3

Make sure that DirectX, Windows Media Player and your video drivers are all up to date.

And Finaly Solution 4

disable Microsoft’s IntelliPoint mouse driver, and use only a generic mouse driver  instead. There has also been a known Issue with Logitech mouse and keyboard drivers and companion software.

We hope this helps. To see more on FTR Products Click Here

Olympus Player Pro 5.0.10 And The Blackberry

In today’s world the Blackberry has become an almost staple among the business, legal and medical professional. And as anyone who uses these smart phones know you can also use the Blackberry for a digital dictation machine.

In the past this has been a problem because while you could use the Blackberry for this purpose there were very few if any dictation and transcription software’s on the market that could read the (.amr) file format that the Blackberry uses to create the voice files. That has now changed.

Olympus who has become one of the most recognizable names in the digital dictation market place has released its latest version of its professional dictation and transcription software. The Player Pro v. 5.0.10.

This latest release from Olympus has the added functionality of being able to read the (.amr) file format. While this ability is constantly being improved in the Dictation and Transcription Modules in order to play the .amr files, those files have to be downloaded from email and imported to the Dictation or transcription software manually.

At current time it may take one extra step than usual but for those who are looking for an agressive and professional transcription method for the blackberry you can’t the new Olympus Player Pro.
